What Makes a Great Class?

The skill of the instructor has the biggest affect. A great instructor knows the subject and loves to teach. The main motivation is to make a difference for the students. Power points can be useful. Pictures, possibly videos and as few words as possible, on the screen.

Students learn more than test info.  Interest is created; a desire to learn  more. Students are expected to do well. Classes are relaxed. Learning is enjoyable. Telling about real life situations, is helpful. but constant war stories are avoided. When demonstrations are not possible, pictures and videos can be a nice substitute. Students are encouraged to help one another. Discussions in groups. Often, students ask each other questions they won't ask the class or instructor. Those who understand the material help those who need it. Language barriers can be overcome. Humor is seen in things. Different than telling jokes. Everyone is included. The instructor makes contact with all students to know if anyone is not keeping up.     Breaks are given. After 20 minutes, people start to lose interest. A great class will have a change of pace, every 20-30 minutes. Everyone gets respect. No-one is made to feel foolish. A great instructor is a performer. Teaching should entertain the mind. Relationships are important. People connect emotionally, no matter the subject. Students understand principals. Understanding remains, long after memory fails.
